PLEAD FOR US by J.A. Pak

Look out the window of our house

(a dream house,

like a house we would live in, have lived in).

On the front lawn,

to the side,

see a large circular, shallow trench.

Inside four, five groundhogs,

standing

on their hind legs,

their paws

together

begging, praying.

All around

snakes, slithering,

all shapes, sizes, colors,

some like needles, others pythons.

Terror

eyes glazed

plead as the snakes

eat inside out.
